Incompatibilities
This is compiled as an incompatibility list.
Any ROM should work (headered and non-headered, non-interleaved), except the following:
- Carts with BS memory pack slots, other than BS-X BIOS (e.g. Derby Stallion 96, any Tsukuuru). They may run but cannot use memory pack related features.
- Sufami Turbo games:
- Car Ranger
- Crayon Shin Chan
- Gegege No Kitarou
- Gekisou Sentai Carranger: Zenkai Racer Senshi
- Poi Poi Ninja
- Sailor Moon Stars Panic 2
- SD Gundam Generations: part 1
- SD Gundam Generations: part 2
- SD Gundam Generations: part 3
- SD Gundam Generations: part 4
- SD Gundam Generations: part 5
- SD Gundam Generations: part 6
- SD Ultra Battle: Seven Legend
- SD Ultra Battle: Ultraman Legend
- Sufami Turbo hardware
- ST-011 games:
- Hayazashi Nidan Morita Shougi
- ST-018 games:
- Hayazashi Nidan Morita Shougi 2
- SPC7110 games:
- Far East of Eden Zero
- Momotaro Dentetsu Happy
- Super Power League 4
BS support is not feature complete (does not simulate lots of different satellite packet streams) so some BS games might not yet run as intended.
Awesome – just what I needed :3
Thanks for the list; although, i do have Carranger working on SD2SNES. :p
I also noticed some promblems with Pilot Wings
Pilotwings works fine maybe you have a bad rom?
what bios would work for Car Ranger? and where could I get it from?
Thanks for the updated list! I’m really enjoying my SD2SNES and want to thank you for all of the hard work you’ve put and continue to put into it! Looking forward to future updates =)
Wenn der sd2snes schon Probleme mit 256kb sram von den Tsukuurus hat, wie sieht es dann mit 512kb bei Dezaemon aus?
Dezaemon hat 1Mb und ist auch in der Liste aufgefรผhrt. ๐
Also, Sound Novel Tsukuuru won’t run at all. might be related to mapping since the game is 24 Mbits and LoROM.
Is it possible to map memory packs (though in read only mode) for different Tsukuuru games by adding the data after the game ROM data?
Same Game Tsume Game seems to accept additional data packs without any trouble when their data is inserted at 0x200000. I have yet to find the correction location and pattern for Tsukuuru line games.
I’m a happy owner of the hardware, thank you for all your efforts!
What I’d really like to have is the ability to add unsupported chips directly to the hardware. (I’m a n00b when it comes to this, so please forgive me if this would be an irrational thought)
If you ever plan to release a new rev of the sd2snes board it would be great to just give people the possibility to add their chips to it. I would have no regrets to take ICs out of fleamarket-carts.
Just my 2 cents.
I think it is better to use a top loader flash cart w/o chip emulation as progress to these seems very difficult. I purchased this card 2 years ago with hope of progress and aside from C4 (2 games) it is not very good. I wound up buying a new cart that simply uses the cart’s with special chips plugged in top and I can play 100% of ROMs.
Where did you get that how much can you send me a link?
I found a bug in “Ballz 3D” japanese version [3-jigen Kakutou Ballz (Japan).sfc], md5: 5403A00958BCB9A3D3FD714C48115E7E
It’s a DSP1-B game, it locks up at the PF.MAGIC logo, in a loop.
Same.
Did you happen to fix it?
GREAT hardware!!! Loving to play the good old games.
But I really regret that SA-1 games are not working.
When will be the time to play it? Any upgrades?
Thanks!
I never ever thought to have so much fun with the good old SNES.
So many thanks for SD2SNES !!!
I LOVE IT !!!!
[…] […]
Was trying to play Marvelous: Mouhitotsu no Takarajima because it was translated recently
but i din’t know it was an SA-1 game …
akira , i wish i could help you out with coding it ๐
i don’t know what to ask first Super FX or SA-1 ๐
or in game save states :p
In game save states will never work reliably because of the sound problem (you cannot snapshot the APU state once it has code uploaded and running).
okรฉ, thanks for the reply
and in game return to Flashcard menu
it that possible, software wise?
I have recently SD2SNES and I wonder if you know how long it will take for the next update, which allows playing games like, Kirbys SuperStar or Mario Bros RPG
thanks
Hi!Super Mario world 2 Yoshi’s island (hacked rom) plays with sd2snes? Thanks !
Hi, if that’s a Super Mario World 1 hack it probably works (given the hack is made to run on real hardware). If it’s a Yoshi’s Island hack it won’t work because of the lack of SuperFX support.
I’ve noticed that Tetris Attack (Panel de Pon) has issues as well. Colors start to go crazy after a few minutes in.
Hi
I just tried the four Sailor Moon games available for the Super Famicom. Of those, the RPG and the quiz one worked, but the two beat-em-ups did not. Everything worked fine until the game starts, then it runs slowly and the image shows like scanlines (I have no device that can produce the scanlines, only my Amercian SNES connected via composite to my HDTV). Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
I know this was from 4 years ago, but right now in 2019, on SD2SNES firmware 1.9.0 the Sailor Moon games work great(beside some garbled text during the intro of Sailor Moon RPG, but there’s a patch for that if you scour the internets for it). Upgrade to 1.9.0 if you haven’t already.
What about rom hacks? For example the various SMW ones that exist, including a few of which that may add extra features like graphics and/or music? And does it make any difference if playing on a real SNES versus, say a Super Retro Trio or similar, when it comes to game hack compatibility? So Super Nintendo + SD2SNES = Certain hacks working/not working Super Retro Trio + SD2SNES = Perhaps more/less hacks working/not working? PS. These kinds of game hacks also exist for other games such as Zelda, Metroid etc. What I am talking about are the more in depth… Read more »
All of the full Zelda/Metroid hacks I’ve tried so far work great. Many of the Mario ones do not. This is because these games aren’t tested on a Snes console during their creation.. Emulators run the games a little bit differently.
Hi. Question directly for the creator from an user: I have a SD2SNES and need to ask one question only and you probably have had it already thousand of times. No need to tell you about the SuperFX 1 or 2 but I need a clear answer if you are willing to answer of course. I know many people if it is not everyone expect to play the SuperFX because the best games are using it of course. My question is this: your hardware (SD2SNES) will be able to handle the SuperFX or not ? (Is it a hardware problem… Read more »
Hi,
it is a software problem. I am quite sure the hardware is able to handle SuperFX but it has to be implemented ๐ I am currently focused on other things but somebody else is looking into SuperFX as we speak. Obviously he isn’t obliged to complete it but let’s see how it turns out.
Well thank you for your answer.
I am waiting for my sd2snes 2 come in can not wait to see what it can do, keep up the good work ikari
hey ikari. is this oroject ooen source? im just thinking about the future; in the event that all chip compatibility or any extra features never happen, would i be able to pick this up? im going into college for electrical engineering w/ computer sci minor, so i feel like this would be a project i could someday help.
+1 for open source, this could really help ensure that this project remains the best.
Yes the Code is Open Siurce and you can find it on https://github.com/mrehkopf/sd2snes and any new commitson https://github.com/mrehkopf/sd2snes/commits
I steh in der Hitz an der Strada del Sole!!!
Hi! I downloaded version 0.17 and I tried playing a game called Legend, but as soon as the game starts, it freezes and I get a message saying “This game pak is not designed for your super famicon or super nes.” Is there any way to avoid this?
That happened again with a game called Iron Commando.
Try to disable the In-game hooks, that’s work for me.
Hi. You said someone is working on the SuperFX chip. What about the SA-1? Thanks.
SuperFX and SA-1 support now in newer firmware. boom
You can run ST games on any SNES Flash cart with a normal only or DSP1 chip but you do have to run the GoodSNES hacks of them which contain the Bios in the rom itself. Hope that helps you with your ST problems. The ST Bios itself has been released for years standalone in multiple sets though ever since GoodSNES era and it’s dumped in No-Intro era too so I don’t see how SD2SNES wouldn’t play them as they are withough a special bios included in the rom GoodSNES version as the bios is dumped and it’s a flashcart… Read more »
I now own an sd2snes and am very impressed with the ease in using its interface. I haven’t run into any problems playing games (other than the exception list). Thank you so much for the work you’ve put in for the gaming community.
That being said, I had a question: have you – or anyone involved in programming for the sd2snes – considered the possibility of crowd-funding for work on the Super FX and SA-1 chips? I imagine that many people might be interested in contributing to such a cause.
I noticed a problem with super punchout with 1.7 preview 4. Game locks up on 2nd fight. As soon as you throw the first punch then press down to dodge the game freezes with garbage all over the screen. Game works fine with 1.6.
Turn off the “In Game Hooks” and it works fine! ๐
Hi: I just got a , got ahold of the ISE WEB PACK for Windows, but when trying to compile the C4 sources (verilog) the main.v file rants about missing a cx4_datrom.ngc file that is missing. I have each sub project inside ipcore_dir (all the .xise c4 sources) they load, but they still need the cx4_datrom.ngc file
Thanks , have a nice day

Hey guys the sufami turbo games do work on the SD2SNES if you have the roms that have the bios already patched into them. theisozone has a pack that has them all. I tested them my self and they work great.
Awesome!!!
Hi i got a supercic PAL snes and a sd2snes, its awesome but i cannot get Axelay to work, any dump atleast in my posession, always crashes after the intro when i press start, to start the game.
My original axelay pal cart however, has exactly the same problem (in the supercic snes) , is this a supercic problem or is there a dump that does work ? (the pal cart does work on my non modded pal snes though)
many thanks if someone can answer it ;/
I’d say something is up with your SNES. I suggest to find “Snes Burn-in Test Cartridge REV D.sfc” and run the Burn-In Test to check for any issues. Maybe the RAM is bad.
Ikari: thanks, i tried that, it passes all tests ok , for what its worth, games like super castlevania IV dont work either on it, but do all work on my non modded pal snes. ;/
Hi!
PAL console errors:
“Super Earth Defense Force” game, restart (reset) the sound is something wrong.
“Super Probotector: Alien Rebels” game from Konami logo after the Intro at the beginning of the sound error clicks into place. After starting the game the sound error clicks into place. But after a good restart (reset).
US console errors:
“Contra III: The Alien Rebels” game also after the intro of Konami’s logo at the beginning of the sound error clicks into place. After restart (reset) is not good.
Yours, Kristรณf

Using “Ogre Battle – The March of The Black Queen (U) [!].smc” (CRC32: 0xACFDB7B8), starting a map and pressing X to open a menu causes the game to freeze and the sound effect they used to indicate text printing to be repeatedly play. Sometimes during this time the menu elements are copied to and overwrite the vertical status indicator in the upper-right corner. In all cases you cannot recover and the game is stuck in this loop repeatedly. It happens randomly, but more often than not (90%of the time). This was tested with a Rev. G SD2SNES with 1.7b firmware… Read more »
I’ve always been interested in Flashcarts, especialy the SD2SNES wich seems to be the best one.but i preffer to wait till i can play Doom,Stunt race FX,Dirt trax FX,Star fox 1 & 2,Mario RPG,Yoshi’s Island,Kirby Super star,Kirby Dream land 3 and Star Ocean in order to buy one.because i really love many of those games.
Perhaps you could purchase those cartridges, and also have the sd2snes? It’s a wonderful addition to any collection.
We’ve been waiting for 3Y, it ain’t happening anytime soon.
SO buy it for what it cab play today, the future is a mistery to anyone don;t bank on SuperFX or SA-1 to appear anytime soon.
It would be nice if S-DD1 and SPC7110 would be tackled, just to finish the “low-hanging” fruit but I am not holding my breath.
It’s happening!!!
But…there are also many games compatible that i really like too..i don’t know what to do!! U_U
I think there are a large number of people like us who are just waiting on the SA-1 or superFX support to be there… pretty much all the games I want (kirby super star, mario rpg) need them.

Hey,
OBC-1 – Metal Combat: Falcon’s Revenge, it’s supported?
I don’t see it on the list.
Thanks!
Yes ๐ The list contains games that are not supported.
Then Krizz must update the page SD2SNES because SUPPORTED ENHANCEMENT CHIPS doesn’t include the OBC-1 game.
It only appear in the compare picture.
Thanks!
I tried Mortal Kombat (U) rom, from the nointro set but it did not start. Black screen, had to power off/on the SNES (reset would not work either). Also tried Mortal Kombat II, but the initial Scupltured Software screen has vertical lines and the lighting looks strange. Can anybody please confirm?
Thanks!!
Also tried Super Metroid, nointro set, new game (not a saved one). It will consistently fail in the 3rd or 4th room after starting (still on Ceres Station), can’t even get to the first fight with Riley. The room is incorrect, I fall through a hole (that is not on the original game) and can’t get out. Can please anybody test and confirm?
Thanks!!
Super Metroid works fine for me (v0.1.7c) with or without in-game hooks enabled. Have you tried the usual (clean contacts, different SD card etc.) lined out in the FAQ Q5?
Hi! I had some slow down with super ghouls and ghosts and with demon crest! Likely to blame my ds card?
Better blame the games ๐ They just don’t run perfectly on the SNES.
Hehe, I take it you never played the originals. For some serious slowdown, try filling the screen with enemies in one of the Mega Man X games.
I do not own an SD2SNES but would happily buy one as soon as it can play Japanese SMRPG and Yoshi’s Island. Is the GitHub repo the best way of “subscribing” to updates? I could not find an RSS feed or mailing list.
Super Punch out always cashes when king hippo throws his first punch.
This is fixed by turning in-game hooks off (L+R+Start+Y). Newer versions of the firmware fix this as well. Check out the in-game hook compatibility page for more details: https://sd2snes.de/blog/compatibility/in-game-hook-compatibility
… King Hippo in Super Punch Out?
Hello friend IKARI, nice to meet you, heyy check this that i found, it might help you with the process of the FX Chip for finally emulate the remaining best games for the Super Nintendo!! For the Super FX chip there is an user at smw central named DiscoTheBat and they are very knowledgeable with this chip. This is what they said: Quote As for the SD2SNES, not yet, a friend of mine already told me to check it out but I havenโt found time for that but I might give a look into it. If possible even, try to… Read more »
So, what can be fixed here, and whats not fixable?
Is this Incompatibility list still up to date?
I wonder too…
It is. Reportedly SF Turbo games sort of work but not with their intended features.
